![]() I feel that instead of asking difficult and philosophical questions we should reframe our question as: What do we want to preserve? ![]() What constitutes a violation of tradition? What do we gain or lose by preserving or not preserving tradition? The word ‘tradition’ is a fertile ground for raising interesting, not easily answerable questions such as: Has tradition a cut-off date (like a ‘classical’ language which must be at least 1,500 years old)?Ĭan there be more than one valid tradition (like two different patantarams for the same kriti from two different sishya paramparas)? It is in this spirit that the following analysis is done. I do not think that any issue on art can ever be resolved entirely by inexorable, objective logic, but analysis often throws more light on the issues and may invite fresh viewpoints. There is no central authority to prescribe what is tradition or what is Carnatic music.
